Gondolin’s Role in the Berwick Bank Offshore Wind Farm Project
In late 2023, the Berwick Bank Offshore Windfarm project received planning permission from East Lothian Council for the onshore infrastructure elements. Members of Gondolin Land & Water have been involved in this project over the past few years, supporting the development by contributing to the onshore Environmental Impact Assessment, construction drainage design and design support for the onshore substation including earthworks and operational drainage designs.

Water Quality Monitoring for the Berwick Bank Onshore Infrastructure
Now at the post planning stages, we have developed a detailed water quality monitoring programme. This WQM programme takes place over twelve months, developing a baseline water quality dataset which will be cross referenced during the construction phase to ensure no deterioration of the water environment as a result of the development.
Our team is trained in utilizing water quality sampling technologies, including in-situ probes. We are also equipped to establish remote monitoring stations that track flow, water quality, and rainfall, with data transmitted live to a secure portal. This allows us to access and manage the data in real time from any location. These remote systems enable us to monitor local water quality closely, responding quickly to any sudden changes and ensuring prompt investigation when necessary.

Powering 6 Million Homes with Renewable Energy
Situated in the North Sea, just off the outer Firth of Forth, the Berwick Bank Offshore Windfarm has the potential to deliver an impressive 4.1 GW of installed capacity, positioning it as one of the largest offshore wind projects globally. With this capacity, it could generate enough clean, renewable energy to power over six million homes and is expected to prevent the release of eight million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.
