Gondolin Land and Water was appointed by ITPEnergised on behalf of ScottishPower Renewables (SPR) to prepare a Drainage Strategy and Water Management Plan (DSWMP) to meet the planning conditions for the Kilgallioch Wind Farm Extension.
Our Role in the Kilgallioch Wind Farm Extension
Our team was tasked with ensuring that water and sediment management on-site met strict environmental regulations throughout both the construction and operational phases. To achieve this, we implemented sustainable drainage systems, monitored water quality, and worked closely with local stakeholders to safeguard nearby watercourses and habitats.
Key Challenges and Solutions
We faced a number of challenges at Kilgallioch, including controlling surface water runoff and sediment during construction, all while adhering to the highest environmental standards.
- Drainage Strategy and Water Management Plan (DSWMP): During construction, we installed upgradient cut-off drainage to capture upland runoff and preserve the natural hydrology. For operational phases, our team adapted the drainage system to manage runoff efficiently, preventing flooding and minimizing environmental impact.
- Water Quality Monitoring Programme (WQMP): To ensure compliance with environmental regulations, we established a water quality monitoring programme. This involved setting up monitoring locations, performing regular inspections by an experienced Chartered Hydrologist, and collaborating with stakeholders like the Galloway Fisheries Trust.
Outcome
Our work involved continuous engagement with stakeholders to ensure the project ran smoothly. This collaborative effort resulted in a successful outcome, with the Kilgallioch Windfarm Extension meeting all its regulatory requirements for surface water and sediment management.
Gondolin’s DSWMP and WQMP for the Kilgallioch Windfarm Extension demonstrate best practices in sustainable drainage and environmental management. By effectively managing water and ensuring regulatory compliance during construction and operation, Gondolin contributed to the project's success.
