Since last summer, Gondolin has been collaborating with the fantastic team at Whitekirk Hill on their extension to the luxury holiday and leisure site in East Lothian. We are thrilled to share some exciting news about the nature-based wastewater treatment system we proposed for this project!

Among the numerous civil engineering and environmental services we have contributed to this development—such as SuDS design, water supply design, 3D cut and fill design, and access road design—the wastewater drainage strategy has been the most challenging.

Addressing Capacity Issues with a Bespoke Wastewater Treatment System

The existing wastewater treatment system serving the current site is at full capacity. Therefore, we designed a new bespoke nature-based wastewater treatment system, completely separate from the existing one, to serve the extension site. This unique system will provide an exceptional level of treatment before discharging to the environment.

Our partners at Viltra have supported the scheme with a bespoke high-performance treatment plant. The system includes a horizontal reed bed/wetland, willow basin, and willow-lined soakaway, creating a diverse and substantial new area of high-value semi-natural habitat for breeding birds, invertebrates, and amphibians.

Achieving Regulatory Compliance and Future Plans

We are excited to announce that we have recently obtained a SEPA CAR licence for this highly bespoke nature-based wastewater treatment system. We look forward to supporting Whitekirk Hill with the implementation and performance monitoring of the scheme in the coming months.

Gondolin has a proven track record and extensive experience in designing bespoke systems in highly constrained environments across the UK. If you'd like to find out of we can help with a project, contact us
