A fantastic opportunity has become available for a Full Time Senior Hydrologist / Flood Risk Engineer to join an Environmental and Civil Engineering consultancy based in Edinburgh, Scotland.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and ambitious individual who has relevant experience in hydrology / flood risk and the environmental consulting space to support in the delivery of a range of projects together with the wider team.

About You

Essentials:

  • Minimum degree requirement: 2:1 in subject field relating to the role 
  • Experienced in Flood Risk Assessment and knowledge of relevant planning and technical guidance  
  • Ability to prepare concise and professional reports 
  • Experience with Project Management including management of deadlines, budgets, resourcing and client communication.   
  • Strong numeracy, oral communication and written English skills 
  • Interest and passion for environmental preservation and the transition to ‘Net Zero’ 
  • Full UK driving licence 
  • Eligible to work in the UK 
  • Ability to lone work and be away from home for short periods of time 
  • Work openly and honestly in a team environment 
  • Friendly and well natured 
  • Practical experience with GIS and/or AutoCad software 

Desirables:

  • Experience with flood modelling software and / or hydrological modelling packages 
  • Drainage design experience 
  • 4x4 / off road driving experience 
  • Outdoor courses / experience 
  • Access to own vehicle
  • Based within a commutable distance to the office 
  • Relevant Masters degree in their field of interest 

Summary Role Description

You will join as a Senior Hydrologist / Flood Risk Engineer and will be allocated a suitable mentor / line manager to oversee your continued training and development. 

The majority of your role will be desk based, however site work will form part of your role and development. This will involve being away from home for short periods of time (e.g. days / the occasional week), therefore the chosen candidate must have a full UK driving licence, be comfortable working away from home within the UK and comfortable driving different vehicles (i.e. small hire vans, company 4x4 etc.). 

You will be provided the relevant training, equipment and materials to support you in your role and will be encouraged to actively pursue particular work streams / tasks which you are most suited to.

Regular reviews will be conducted by your line manager to enable you to provide relevant feedback – we encourage an open and honest culture where staff are free and able to speak their minds and offer constructive feedback. 

You would be expected to be involved in the efficient operation and evolution of the business, assist with budget / resource planning, project management, training junior staff, quality assurance and assisting your peers in seeking new business, clients and opportunities. 

Your primary role however would be providing technical inputs and management of projects with the support of your peers and junior staff and to advance our hydrology and flood risk offering. 

Within your role at Gondolin you will have the opportunity to gain experience in a wide range of applications across both the Water Environment and Environmental Consulting space depending on your educational background and career aspirations. Gondolin are involved in projects in a range of sectors and support developments from early feasibility stages, through planning and beyond to construction design and site supervision. 

Examples of the type of work which you would typically be involved with or responsible for are shown below. Clearly the personal attributes, qualities and training of the chosen candidate would be taken into account for the allocation of technical tasks: 

  • Flood Risk Assessment 
  • Hydraulic Flood Modelling 
  • Drainage Design
  • Water Quality / Quantity Monitoring (i.e. water sampling and hydrometric installations) 
  • Hydrological and hydrogeological Modelling 
  • Fieldwork - various 
  • Project Management 
  • Preparing AutoCAD / GIS based technical and spatial drawings

Renumeration Package

The chosen candidate would be expected to complete a statutory 6-month probation period. Upon successful completion of this the employee would be enrolled onto the various employer schemes (healthcare, life assurance etc). 

Route to Chartership

The management team are Chartered Members of their chosen professional accreditation bodies and will fully support and mentor the candidate in their chosen path towards Chartership. This includes paying the annual membership fees of the candidates chosen professional body. 

Work Location

Our office is located in Leith, Edinburgh. 

All staff typically spend the majority of the week working from the office, however there is the flexibility for home working an agreed number of days per week. Such details would be discussed / agreed with the candidate as part of the interview process. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will be based within a commutable distance of the office and would be office based for at least 2-3 days per week.
